Fibromyalgia is a frequent cause of widespread pain. Its cause and mechanism are not well understood and some even deny that it exists. Generally widespread pain, stiffness, tingling, burning, dizziness, headache, jaw clenching and frequently irritable colon characterize it. Most patients have symptoms for years before they are diagnosed and often the diagnosis is missed altogether. The cause of the pain is not clear but in my experience the patients with this condition frequently have had difficult lives and marked stresses that have lead to a constant state of the muscles being contracted and even in spasm. Day after day, year after year this state becomes chronic and the variety of symptoms progressively appear.
